Legislative Council and approved by that body. That the total

expenditure in the Colony from the 5th August to 31st December

on the Censorship, Volunteers, Passages of Officers and re-

cruits and many other charges in connection with the war had

been $78,000, a low figure.

In conclusion Mr Cartwright said that what they felt

was the insecurity of their position as defined orally by the

Provost Marshal, and that they had received nothing in writing

from him or from the Military Authorities. He added that

their desire was to abide loyally by all reasonable restrictions.
